Welcome to the Coats Career and Technology Center--Horticulture Class, Floral Design.  The Floral Design Class is doing a variety of activities.  The students have access to live flowers, greenery and other accessories in order to complete individual projects.  Many times throughout the year the classes are responsible for flower arrangements and flowers for special occasions such as homecoming and banquets.  Their exposure to horticulture takes on many avenues that require a variety of "hands-on" skills which are emphasized in this class.
--Mrs. Dawn Culbertson, Instructor

Cooperative Teaching -April  2005
Horticulture Instructor Mrs. Dawn Culbertson's class with Ms. Kate Saltzman's elementary class came together to give the high school students an opportunity to work with the elementary students in a subject area where they both might gain a new experience.

Mrs. Culbertson explained that plants require four things to grow: soil, water, light and air.  With that in mind the students went on to pot an individual marigold plant for themselves which will later be given as Mother's Day presents in May.  From getting their hands in the potting soil, choosing a small marigold plant, and watering the students followed the procedure paper developed by Mrs. Culbertson's language arts class, for potting a plant.  The elementary  students followed up the hands-on experience with a coloring page that identified the parts of a plant.  Everyone enjoyed their class in Horticulture that day.

Horticulture Activity with the Freshman Class, February 2005

For Valentine's Day this year the Freshman class decided to sell Flower-Grams as a fund-raising activity.  With the help of the Horticulture Instructor, Mrs. Dawn Culbertson their extra-curricular project was very successful.

The Class of  2008 also worked in a community service project with this activity. They delivered Valentine's Day flowers to residents at the Missouri Association of Deaf Apartments in Fulton.  This was so well received that several residents responded with their heartfelt thanks.

The Freshmen came in the evening before Valentine's day  to prepare the flowers.

Nikki cuts the flower to the correct length.

Students get directions from Mrs. Culbertson.

Kathleen and Chetara work on the flowers.

Brian, Johnny and LeDaya
place the flower stem into the water tube.

LeDaya, Johnny, Brian and Nikki are very productive.

Mrs. Culbertson sorts for delivery.

Everyone is working hard to fill all orders.

LeDaya cuts the flower stem on an angle.

Kathleen and Johnny label the flowers for delivery.

The class proudly store the flowers in the cooler for the next days' delivery.

Mrs. Culbertson assigns the flower deliveries to Nikki, Anjoylen, David and Jarrell.

Chetara, Anjoylen and Brian get their deliveries from Mrs. Culbertson.

David and Brian help sort the orders.

Jarrell and Johnny with Mrs. Culbertson.

The freshman class travel to the Missouri Association of Deaf Apartments to deliver flowers.

Each student takes some Valentine carnations and a greeting from the MSD freshman  class to the residents.

Nikki is making her delivery.

Nathan rings the door bell, ready to surprise the resident.

Haley is excited about delivering the flowers and says it makes her feel good.

This resident was thrilled with the flowers and having her picture made with Kathleen, Brian and Chetara.

LeDaya says "Happy Valentine's Day" to this resident as Brent looks on.

This resident graduated from MSD in 1930.  She loved the flowers and the visit from Chetara, David and Brian.

One resident from the apartment complex was so touched by the students visit, that cupcake treats were sent to the school for the freshman class.

The freshman class pose for a picture before they enjoy their cupcakes.

Horticulture-- September 2004

Mrs. Culbertson with Stark student, Daniel.

Cooperative Teaching

In early September Ms. Jerri Rimmer's Stark classes came to the Coats Career and Technology Center.  We created a cooperative teaching/learning situation in the Flower Design class.  My horticulture students worked with the Stark students to make bud vase arrangements that were later put  on display in the cafeteria.  We paired a horticulture student with a Stark child to make the arrangements and then took them to McKee dining hall.  They were all proud of their accomplishment and a good time was had by all.  Enjoy the pictures.    --Mrs. Culbertson
