Mission:

The mission of the Health Center is provide the best possible medical care for students while they attend the Missouri School for the Deaf (MSD).  The Health Center staff strives to do this in a manner which consistently creates a positive, pleasant and productive health care environment for both students and staff.

Services:

The Health Center staff consists of two registered nurses, three licensed practical nurses, one nursing assistant and one doctor. The nurse's hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The hours of 11:00 p.m. through 7:00 a.m. are staffed by a nursing assistant. The Health Center is closed weekend overnight and holidays when all students are home. A doctor visits two to three times a week if needed. Health Center Staff, with the doctor's input, may keep a student in the Infirmary for a short-term minor illness or may send a student home for medical attention. It is necessary for all students at MSD to have their own home family doctor.  Basic health care will be provided to all students who become ill or injured while attending MSD.  Students who have been absent due to illness are requested to report to the Health Center before returning to school or dormitory.   Parents will be notified immediately if their child is injured or becomes seriously ill while at school.

Medications are kept at the Health Center and students are asked to report to there for medicine. This policy is for the safety of everyone and also will allow for more accurate assessment of the student's response to the medicine.

All students have a vision screening every two years or sooner if requested for special problems. Special services, such as diet counseling, scoliosis screening, blood pressure checks, classroom presentations and other individual needs are provided as indicated. The nurses would be happy to discuss any questions that parents may have regarding the health of their child or Health Center policies.

Please call your child’s school if your child will be absent.  You can reach the schools at the following phone numbers:

 Stark School – 573-592-2535

Middle School – 573-592-2515

High School – 573-592-2515

The Health Center needs to be kept up-to-date about any allergies that your child may have to drugs, insects, latex, or foods and the reactions that result from these allergies.  We also ask that you keep us informed of any medical updates on your child such as immunizations, medications, or illnesses.  The phone number for the MSD Health Center is:  573-592-2547 (v/tty) and the fax number is 573-592-2579.
