The MSD Library sponsors RIF*, Reading is Fundamental,  three times a year.  This is a program where all the students can pick out free books to take home. 

The next RIF* Distribution will be held the

week of May 2, 2005. 

Students involved in art will be displaying

some of their work throughout that whole week. 

 

During the first RIF* distribution this year, Stark Elementary students did short ASL stories.

     

   

Joyla starts off the program with an ASL 1-5  story.

 

Kevin has his own ASL story using hand shapes.

 

Kiara, with the help of other classmates, starts off their ABC story "Mom Goes to Work"  by using the letters A to G.

 

   

    

   

Jessica continues the ABC story with mom getting ready for work  by using the letters H to N.

 

 Lindsey adds on to the story with mom getting in the car by using the letters O to T.

 Victoria concludes this very cute ASL ABC story with mom driving and arriving at work with the letters U to Z.

 

Mrs. LaBorde show the students that there are many versions of the story "The Three Little Pigs". She adds a twist to her version of the story.

The Second annual  RIF*, Reading is Fundamental, program was held on February 8th.  Students were able to pick out 2 free books.  During RIF* High School drama students had 7 different stations that included short skits to tribute Laura Redden Searing, a famous journalist and MSD 1858 graduate's, life.

Born February 9, 1840 in Sumerset County Maryland. Enrolled in MSD in 1855 at the age of 15. Graduated MSD in 1858.  She died August 10, 1923 in San Mateo, California

                                                                       Laura Redden Searing

 Searing wrote for many newspapers and magazines. She also had books of poetry and short stories published. The library carries some of her publications.

 

 

    

 

Haley portrays Lalla Rookh, who is a character in one of Laura Redden Searing's favorite books.

Kevin portrays President Abraham Lincoln being interviewed by Searing, portray by Brittany.

Nick portrays Ulysses Grant, who, explains his amazement, of Searing coming to the battlefield to interview him and his men.

 

     

 

Monielle portrays Searing recounting a  time on horseback  going from camp to  camp during the Civil War. Kira  portrays a bird that represents a poem written  by Searing. Stephanie portrays Searing while reading one of her poems.

 

      

Branndon portrays MSD Superintendent William Kerr. Kerr was MSD's first Superintendent. He was superintendent for 38 years Angelo portrays Michael George Brennan, Searing's true love, who died before they could marry. Kyle portrays John Wilkes Booth, who Searing  help  compose a poem for a lady friend.  He was also the man that shot Lincoln.
